VACANCY: RESIDENT POSITION IN ECVCN

(EUROPEAN COLLEGE OF VETERINARY AND COMPARATIVE NUTRITION)
Specializing in Equines & Small Animals Nutrition

The Importance of Veterinary Nutrition

Nutrition is vital for the health and recovery of companion animals, often serving as a core treatment for common diseases and, in some cases, the primary therapy. A well-balanced, tailored diet can significantly enhance clinical outcomes, promote recovery, and improve quality of life.
In equine athletes, optimized nutrition is equally crucial for maximizing performance. While supplements are frequently used to boost results, careful selection is essential, as they can be either beneficial or detrimental.
If you're passionate about veterinary nutrition and committed to helping dogs, cats, or horses reach their full health and performance potential, this opportunity may be ideal for you!

Candidate Profile

We are looking for a veterinarian who:

  • Has at least one year of clinical experience.
  • Demonstrates a broad clinical interest, particularly in the area of nutrition.
  • Is motivated to follow the three-year full-time residency program, working towards passing the European College of Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition (ECVCN) board exam at the end of this period.
  • Is available to start the residency on April 1, 2025.
  • Will receive a scholarship for the full duration of the residency.

Role Responsibilities

  1. Primary Contact for Nutrition Services

As the resident, you will become the primary point of contact for either the small animal nutrition or equine nutrition service, depending on your specialization. You will focus on providing clinical nutritional advice for dogs, cats, and/or horses. Many of these cases come through veterinary practitioners, and you will work closely with the clinics at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University. Your role will include:
    o Developing individualized dietary plans.
o Monitoring and following up on patient progress to ensure the best possible clinical outcomes.

  2. Rotational Clinical Work

As part of the nutrition service team, you will participate in a rotation system. This includes:
o Clinical rotations in the nutrition clinic, where you will see patients and provide expert dietary advice.
o Handling urgent nutritional requests, where timely advice is required to address critical patient needs.

  3. Research and Education

In addition to the clinical aspect of the residency, you will be involved in:
o Conducting clinical or research projects in the field of veterinary nutrition, helping to advance knowledge in this important area.
o Participating in the education of veterinary students, sharing your knowledge and experience to help train the next generation of veterinarians.
o Delivering presentations on various nutritional topics, both within the university and at external events, helping to raise awareness of the importance of nutrition in veterinary care.
